Ousmane Dembele could join Manchester United from Barcelona before the summer transfer window shuts.
Red Devils executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is in talks with the La Liga giants over a potential deal.
United have prioritised a move for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho all summer but have failed to come to an agreement over a fee.
Dortmund’s insistance that the Premier League club would have to pay their £108m valuation means United are looking elsewhere.
France international Dembele is wanted on loan and United have proposed a season-long deal to Barcelona, according to the Daily Record .
Barcelona want a sale, though, and have whacked a £90m price-tag on 23-year-old Dembele.
The winger has had injury problems at the Nou Camp ever since joining from Dortmund, so Barcelona are willing to offload him.
But a simple loan deal would not be enough for the La Liga club, who are demanding an obligatory purchase option at the end of the season if United are to take him.

That means United would have to sign Dembele on a permanent basis for £90m next summer, irrelevant of how he does this term on loan at Old Trafford.
Woodward and other United officials are in discussions with Barcelona chiefs over the viability of a move.
And while there is no agreement yet, Dembele himself would also have to be convinced the switch is right for him.
His preference for now is to remain in Catalonia, where he is contracted to until 2022.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate for a top-quality right-winger and United have little time left to get a signing over the line.
The window shuts on October 5, so Woodward and Co have less than a fortnight to bolster Solskjaer’s squad.
Additionally, Daily Star Sport understands United are closing in on Porto left-back Alex Telles.
