Edinson Cavani among Man Utd players absent vs PSG while 25-man squad explained

Edinson Cavani will not make his Manchester United debut against hid old team PSG on Tuesday.

The Red Devils play away to the French giants at the Parc des Princes in their group stage opener this week.

But the game has come too soon for striker Cavani, who is working his way up to match fitness.

Mason Greenwood and Harry Maguire also have small injuries which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer feels they should both recover from in time to play Chelsea on Saturday in the Premier League.

But the loss of the star trio is not ideal for the game against PSG, as United look to get off to a strong start in Europe this term.

Solskjaer said: “We have lost a couple, so that is (Eric) Bailly and (Jesse) Lingard who also didn’t travel.

“We hope the players won’t be away for too long. Edinson (Cavani) needs a few more days training before we can maybe think about the weekend.

“Hopefully Harry (Maguire), Eric (Bailly) and Mason (Greenwood) as well, but not sure about that.”

The United boss was asked whether Greenwood and Brandon Williams’ absences against Newcastle in Saturday’s 4-1 win at St James’ Park were for disciplinary reasons.

Solskjaer snapped back: “If that is the case, why is Brandon here (with the squad in Paris)? What are your sources that is what I am saying. No (truth).”

Quizzed on why Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Sergio Romero were left out of United’s Champions League squad too, the manager said: “We have a squad of 25 to put on the list.

“Phil has been injured, Marcos has been injured and away for a long time and Sergio has not come back to us yet.

“So when we had to have list we put the available players on.”
