Edinson Cavani to Man Utd: Jose Mourinho sends former club strong message over transfer

Edinson Cavani has been hailed as one of the best strikers in the world ahead of his move to Manchester United by Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho. The former United manager heaped praise on the Uruguayan ahead of his imminent move to Old Trafford.

United are expected to confirm the signing of Cavani today.

The 33-year-old has been without a club since his Paris Saint-Germain contract expired at the end of last season.

He left the club as their all-time record goalscorer, and had a wealth of options available to him.

Potential moves to Benfica and Atletico Madrid both fell through over his agents’ demands for a fee worth in the region of €10million (£9m) for facilitating the deal.

His representatives engaged in talks with United chiefs on Saturday over a move, and he reportedly flew to Manchester on Sunday to put pen to paper.

Cavani is set to sign a one-year contract worth £220,000-per-week, with United holding a club option to extend the deal for an extra year.

While the negotiations were going on, his new club suffered one of their worst defeats in recent memory, as they were battered 6-1 at Old Trafford by Tottenham.

Speaking after the game, Spurs boss Mourinho discussed the potential signing and heaped praise on club chiefs for going through with the deal to bring in Cavani.

He expressed that United had done well in the transfer market recently, and described the 33-year-old as one of the best strikers around.

“The team is improving, they have good players, he bought lots of young players, they bought very good players,” said Mourinho.

“If it’s true that Cavani is coming, Cavani is one of the top strikers in the world.”

United were left in 16th place in the Premier League after the humiliating loss against Spurs, and have now conceded 11 goals from their opening three games.

But Mourinho believes his old side will be fine, expressing that the Red Devils will react well to the defeat and come again.

He said: “Manchester United is Manchester United, it’s not this defeat that’s going to destroy them.

“I can imagine they are going to react like Manchester United always react.”

United are set for a busy transfer deadline day, with three new faces potentially coming in.

As well as Cavani, Alex Telles is set to sign after agreeing personal terms on Sunday.

United agreed to pay £20m for the Porto left-back, who will come in as competition for Luke Shaw.

They are then expected to focus on their bid to sign a new winger, and could make another move for Jadon Sancho.

If they still refuse to meet Borussia Dortmund’s £108m valuation of the wonderkid, they have been tipped to go after Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele.
