Egyptian football has gone into mourning this weekend after Adham El-Selhadar, manager of second division side El Magd, passed away from cardiac arrest whilst celebrating a last-minute winner for his side. And tributes have flown in from all around the nation, with clubs marking their respects for the coach.

El Magd faced El Zarqa in a second division match on Thursday, with the former scoring deep into added time to essentially win the game.

The dugout went wild, lifting the home side from relegation candidates to mid-table.

Yet it quickly became apparent that manager El-Selhadar was in some discomfort despite the heroics.

Their worst fears were confirmed when the former Ismaily boss was rushed to hospital after suffering a heart attack.

And it was later announced that the popular manager had passed away, with tributes pouring in for one of Egypt’s most respected managers.

A statement from his former side and Premier Division outfit Ismaily read: “The Ismaily Board of Directors, headed by Engineer Yahya El-Komy, mourns the death of Adham El-Selhadar, a star and former coach of the team, who passed away as a result of a sudden heart attack, following his team’s match, El-Majd Alexandria, in the second division league.

“Against this background, the Board of Directors has declared three days of mourning for the passing of his soul.”

The tributes didn’t stop there, as Ismaily’s rivals Al Ahly also paid their respects to El-Selhadar.

A statement from the Cairo-based side read: “Captain Mahmoud Al-Khatib, president of the club, and the members of the board of directors, mourn with great sadness and sorrow, coach Adham El-Selhadar, the former Ismaily player, who passed away on Thursday.

“Praying to the Almighty to cover the deceased with his vast mercy and enter him into his vast gardens.”

His club El Magd announced a six-day period of mourning, with their next fixture against Pioneers FC being suspended as a mark of respect.

El-Selhadar enjoyed a successful playing career, winning the Egyptian Premier League and Cup with Ismaily.

He later returned as a manager to his former side, becoming a hugely respected coach.

Tributes will continue to pour in for a man who was well respected in the Egyptian game.

El Magd’s next fixture is against Dekernes on December 16.
