Eight players Barcelona could let go to ease financial worries – including Messi

Barcelona’s well documented financial woes will almost certainly see them let some of their star players go this summer.

At the end of January, it was reported that the club are on the verge of bankruptcy, having made an £84million loss in 2020.

It was also revealed that Barca have debts of nearly £1 billion, with £233m of that debt needing to be paid this coming summer.

That means the club, who are about to undergo a election for a new president will be actively trying to move players out of the exit door to raise funds.

Here we look at eight players who could leave the Camp Nou…

1. Lionel Messi

The jewel in Barcelona’s crown, it is hard to imagine Messi playing for a team other than the Catalan club.

But relations between Messi and Barca have fractured in recent seasons, with the club’s failure to challenge for trophies clearly grating on the Argentinian.

Messi was close to leaving last summer, with PSG and Manchester City both heavily linked to his signature.

But with his contract up in June, Messi is almost certain to leave this time around, though getting rid of his massive salary of £26million per year would undoubtedly help to relieve Barca’s financial issues.

2. Philippe Coutinho

Coutinho has not had the desired effect on Barcelona since his £130million move from Liverpool – which at the time made him the world’s second most expensive player.

The midfielder has made 90 appearances for Barca since arriving at the Camp Nou in 2018, struggling to break into the starting line-up.

Hi performances for Bayern Munich, as well as the memory of his stunning displays for Liverpool, should ensure Barca can recoup a sizeable portion of the fee they paid for him.

At 28, he is also still relatively young and should still be at the peak of powers. The Brazilian is currently valued at £45m by transfermarkt.

3. Ousmane Dembele

  • Like Coutinho, Barca also paid out more than £100m to sign Dembele from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.

He has played across the front three during his career, netting 27 goals and recording 20 assists during his time at Barca.

However, impacting the fee Dembele would bring in would be the fact that the last time he reached double figures for league goals was 2016.

Dembele would currently bring in £45m, according to transfermarkt.

    4. Samuel Umtiti

Umtiti has frequently found himself left out of Barca’s plans this season, starting just four La Liga matches.

Though he has won a World Cup and played in a European Championships final, Umtiti could find himself heading though the Camp Nou exit door.

Barca’s vast financial issues have been well documented and if they did decide to sell the Frenchman, it would not make much of a dent in their debt, with Umtiti valued at just £9m by transfermarkt.

    5. Martin Braithwaite

One of the strangest transfers of recent years, Barca signed Braithwaite from Leganes in February 2020.

But the move has not turned out to be the dream the former Middlesbrough man was hoping for, as he has scored just eight goals in 43 appearances for the Catalan club.

He is far from the elite talent that is usually seen at Barcelona and as such is valued at just over £8m by transfermarkt.

    6. Carles Alena

    • Ex-Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu among four arrested after police raid

23-year-old Alena is currently on loan at Getafe and has featured in their last nine La Liga matches having previously struggled to break into their starting line-up.

The midfielder has made 44 appearances for Barca, but has been loaned out in two successive January transfer windows.

Though he has mainly played as an attacking midfielder for Getafe, he has scored just one goal.

With better options ahead of him in midfield, it would appear that Alena will be leaving the club, and is valued at £13.5m by transfermarkt.

    7. Sergio Busquets

    • Barcelona’s Nou Camp raided by police over investigation into ‘Barcagate’ scandal

Busquets has continued to be a key part of Barcelona’s midfield this season, even captaining the side on occasion.

But like many other members of Barca’s era-defining side, the 32-year-old has experienced a slump in form.

And with Frenkie de Jong, a player more than capable of playing in Busquets’ position on the books, an exit for the Spaniard could be on the cards.

Despite winning eight La Liga titles, Busquets is valued at only £9m by transfermarkt.

    8. Junior Firpo

    • Gerard Pique running company making millions that even Lionel Messi has invested in

Firpo has failed to establish himself in Barcelona’s starting line-up since joining from Real Betis in 2019.

Jordi Alba is a top-quality left-back so it is unfair to judge Firpo on his failure to break past the Spaniard.

If he did decide to go in search of first team football, the 24-year-old would be valued at £9m, according to transfermarkt.
