Elton John called up Ryan Reynolds after Wrexham’s promotion to Football League

Wrexham returned to the Football League after a prolonged stint in the wilderness of non-league last season – as the Hollywood backed club steamrolled the National League.

And even music legemd Sir Elton John was left so impressed with the feat, he had to pick up the phone and give Ryan Reynolds a call. Speaking to Gary Lineker on Football Focus, Sir Elton said: "I phoned up Ryan when they won, and I just thought it was fantastic!

"You know, they're on the ride that I was on, it's slightly different because times have changed! But it's no more less exciting. It's so exciting for them, I bet they have more fun doing that than any film they've ever done!"

Sir Elton was one of the first 'celebrity owners' when he purchased his beloved Watford in 1976. He revealed: "I did a concert here with Rod Stewart to raise money for the club and I become vice-chairman.

"The chairman was Jim Bonser. He'd had enough of the abuse. I made him an offer he couldn't refuse. I became a director and then chairman. I was so determined to do something other than what I'd been doing, totally different to what I'd been doing."

Wrexham struggled in the early weeks after their return to the EFL, but the Red Dragons have since found their feet in England's fourth tier.

And the Hollywood-backed side – co-owned by Reynolds and actor pal Rob McElhenney – have started to march up the table, with Phil Parkinson's side currently fourth on the same points as last season's rivals Notts County. Wrexham face Morecambe on Saturday (November 25) with a chance to go second if results go their way.
