England line-up last time they faced France at top tournament gives flashbacks

Only one player from the England side that took on France at Euro 2012 could feature in the fixture again on Saturday – in a team that featured John Terry and Steven Gerrard.

Having lost only four of their first 23 fixtures against the French, England have lost five of the most recent eight which include a 1-1 draw at Euro 2012.

That group stage fixture included an opening goal from Joleon Lescott and striking role for Danny Welbeck – with current hero Jordan Henderson coming off the bench as Samir Nasri equalised.

With Joe Hart in goal, Lescott was joined in defence by Terry, Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson with Scott Parker Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner with Gerrard in the middle.

Up front was Welbeck with Ashley Young in behind, with Three Lions supporters having very different reactions to the starting XI, with some pointing out that many would get a spot in the current side.

One fan said: "Gerrard, cole, terry and hart would all get in the 2022 england side."

A second then agreed: "Pickford worse than Hart, Cole better than Shaw, Lescott better than Maguire, Terry better than Stones."

A third then posted: "10 years from now you'll look at this England squad in the same vein. Recency bias leads to current players being massively overrated."

But another slammed the team by saying: "We don't know how good we've got it."

A second said: "God! this nation has suffered."

With Gareth Southgate's current team still including Henderson, they go into the game against France full of confidence thanks to their tournament pedigree.

Hodgson's men lost in the quarter-final of Euro 2012, going out in the group stage of the 2014 World Cup and in the last 16 of Euro 2016.

Under Southgate, England reached the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup and were losing finalists at Euro 2020 before the current campaign, in which they have impressed.

With Hugo Lloris set to feature for France having also started back in 2012, Olivier Giroud didn't make it off the bench.
