‘Get him away from them!’: England are ‘wasting their time’ with Gareth Southgate as ‘the players feel his fear’, says the Three Lions manager’s former Middlesbrough striker Mido – who wants Jose Mourinho to take over for Euro 2020
- England suffered 2-0 defeat by Belgium in Nations League on Sunday evening
- It was Gareth Southgate’s 10th defeat since he took the helm of national side
- His former Middlesbrough player Mido took to Twitter to criticise manager
- He wrote: ‘England need a proper manager, they’re wasting time with Southgate’
England need to get rid of Gareth Southgate and replace him with a ‘proper manager’ such as Jose Mourinho, claims Mido.
The Egyptian, who played under Southgate at Middlesbrough, unleashed a blistering attack on the Three Lions boss in the wake of England’s 2-0 defeat by Belgium in the Nations League on Sunday.
He wrote: ‘England need a proper manager. They are wasting their time with Southgate.
Gareth Southgate is not the man to lead England forward as manager, according to Mido
Southgate managed Mido at Middlesbrough but the former striker evidently does not rate him
‘It’s true he always says the right things in the media and probably that’s why he kept his job for so long but believe me, he is stuttering every time things goes wrong at halftime. Players feel his fear!
‘I remember him at Middlesbrough, he was scared to death when we were fighting relegation. True, it was his first job, but these things never change.
‘If you are scared of losing a football match, you will always be scared of losing a football match!! And players can always feel it.
‘England got some top talents in their side, but they need a manager with strong character, someone who can get them to enjoy themselves and play with no fear. I’m sorry but Southgate is not the man to do that.
‘My advice to the FA is go and get Mourinho as your head coach and appoint Southgate as the FA chairman. They are both perfect for the job. Get Southgate away from the players as far as you can.’
The defeat against Belgium was Southgate’s 10th in charge of 48 games for the national side, the same number as Sven-Goran Erikssen, who presided over 67 matches.
Mido worked under Southgate in the aforementioned 2008-09 campaign having joined the club the year before.
Boro were relegated after embarking winning just once in 18 games on an abysmal run.
Mido is now a manager himself at El Makkasa in his homeland and has been in the hotseat for five different sides since taking to the dugout in 2014.
