Football Digest: Assessing England’s legacy post World Cup
Sarina Wiegman’s contract needs to be ‘ripped up’ so that the FA can hand her a new one after England’s World Cup heroics, Robbie Savage believes. Wiegman led the Lionesses to the final of the tournament but they were defeated by Spain in heartbreaking fashion.
The 53-year-old has a contract that runs until 2025 but she has been linked with several other jobs. The US women’s team are said to be interested, while the Dutch men’s national team were suggested as a possible destination.
FA chiefs are desperate to keep Wiegman on board for the foreseeable future due to the remarkable success under her leadership. England won the European Championship last summer and came so close to winning a first senior World Cup for the country since the men achieved the feat in 1966.
Former Premier League midfielder Savage wants Wiegman’s contract ‘torn up’ – but only so that it can be significantly improved.

Savage told Planet Sport Bet: “What a World Cup it was for the Lionesses. They fell just short against Spain, who I thought were the better team in the final and deserved the victory. Don’t take anything away from England, though, I thought the whole squad and the management team were brilliant and the big question now seems to be Sarina Wiegman’s future.
“She’s been linked with the United States job. Her CV speaks for itself and she’s proven she can do it in the big tournaments.
“She’s clearly a great manager of her players as well as being a great coach, so it’s understandable why the likes of the USA are looking at her. She’s got a contract till 2025 and if I was the FA, I’d rip it up and I’d give her a new long-term deal.

Piers Morgan reacts after his Women’s World Cup remark sparks backlash[LATEST]
“How she’s got the team playing and how she’s helped make the team role models for young girls around the country is something she should be very proud of. The way she and the players have been an inspiration to the whole country and how they’ve put a real spotlight on the women’s game is fantastic.
“The coverage both the WSL and women’s international football gets versus a few years ago is like chalk and cheese, and the FA really need to tie her down to a new contract because she has all the tools to make England the best team in the world.”
Wiegman herself has no plans to step away from her role just yet. She said ahead of the World Cup final: “I’m really enjoying my job and I have the impression that people still like me doing that job. I have no plans to leave.”
