Manchester City star Rico Lewis has been struck by a lighter thrown by Burnley fans during their Premier League opening day clash at Turf Moor.

The incident occurred in the 26th-minute when Lewis was knocked to the floor after being shoved by Burnley's Josh Cullen near the corner flag.

The 18-year-old shouted in pain after appearing to be hit in the head by the lighter, which was thrown at him from just a few yards away by the home supporters. Fans on social media branded the incident "disgraceful", with some even calling for Burnley to face punishment for the behaviour.

"Absolutely disgusting stuff from Burnley. Launching a lighter at a teenager. Disgraceful stuff," one supporter fumed on Twitter.

"Dirty. They should get relegated for this," wrote another, while a third said: "Ridiculous behaviour when the eyes of the country are on you on the first day of the Prem. Burnley ought to be punished. Horrible fans."

"Find the clown who did and issue them a lifetime ban," commented another.

"I can’t comprehend the mindset it takes to do that. I’ve been to a lot of live events, 50/50 of the time s***housed, and the thought would still never occur to me," tweeted another.

City got their revenge on the pitch after racing into a 2-0 lead before half-time, with Erling Haaland (who else) grabbing both goals.

His first, which came after just three minutes, was a classic poacher's effort, with the burly Norwegian reacting quickest to a Rodri knockdown and slotting home from close range, though his second was a thing of beauty – a driven curler from the corner of the box.

Lewis, who started the game at left back, was making his 24th appearance in a City shirt.
