Ferdinand on Rashford strength that left RB Leipzig ‘looking like schoolboys’

Rio Ferdinand was full of praise for Marcus Rashford after his display against RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Manchester United went into the match knowing a decent result would leave them with a good chance in the group after beating Paris Saint-Germain on matchday one.

And that is exactly what they got with an astonishing 5-0 over last year's semi-finalists.

Much can be owed to the ability of Rashford, who came off the bench to net a brilliant hat-trick.

United had been in control for much of the match and were a goal up through Mason Greenwood in the first-half.

But with half-hour to go, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer chucked the main man on to devastating effect.

A quickfire double was followed up by his third in stoppage time to raise spirits tenfold around Old Trafford.

And former United defender and BT Sport pundit Ferdinand was over the moon, revealing how Rashford had made the opposition defenders look like "schoolboys".

He said: "Marcus Rashford is on fire. It's like being in the playground with a sixth former against the younger boys and he just bullies everyone – too quick and too strong.

"He was head and shoulders above Leipzig. He made some defenders, who we were raving about before the game, look like schoolboys tonight."

Indeed, Leipzig's defenders have been catching the eye of scouts around the world.

In particular, Dayot Upamecano – who has been strongly linked with a move to United next summer.

The Frenchman will see a £38m release clause trigger in his contract next year and the Red Devils are looking to frame themselves at the front of the queue.

As for Rashford, his stardom continues to shine on the pitch as well as off it.

Earlier this month he was awarded an MBE for his charitable work while he continues his campaign to extend free school meals into half-term.
