Ferran Torres has become Xavi’s first signing as Barcelona manager with the Catalan club stumping up £46.4million to sign him from Manchester City. The Spain international had started the season in fine form for Pep Guardiola’s side, scoring twice in a memorable 5-0 win over Arsenal back in August.

But he soon dropped to the bench and hasn’t been seen in the City squad since the start of September.

A foot injury has largely kept him out of action, although an impending move to Barcelona was all but confirmed by Guardiola recently.

Speaking last week, the City boss admitted that he wasn’t going to fight for Torres to stay once the forward made it clear that he was keen on a move to the Nou Camp.

“I cannot push the players or convince the player if his mind is elsewhere. [It makes] no sense,” said Guardiola.

“Other clubs say it doesn’t matter, I’m not agreeing. Every club has to decide how to deal with that, [this is] my personal opinion [to let them leave].”

And now Torres’ move to Barcelona has been confirmed after he arrived in Spain at the weekend.

Barcelona have agreed to pay an initial fee of £46.4m plus £8.4m in add-ons.

City confirmed the news with a statement on their website, and their director of football Txiki Begiristain said: “Ferran should be proud of what he has achieved here at Manchester City.

“Last season was his first time in a new country, but he adapted well. He always gave 100%, worked hard for the team and scored goals which helped us win trophies.

“Injury unfortunately prevented him from playing more games this season, but Ferran is a player we have all enjoyed working with and we wish him all the best at Barcelona and for the rest of his career.”

Barcelona, meanwhile, said: “FC Barcelona has reached an agreement with Manchester City for the transfer of Ferran Torres.

“The player has signed a contract for the next five seasons, until 30 June 2027, and his buyout clause has been set at 1,000 million euros.”

He will be officially presented as a Barcelona player in a welcome ceremony next Monday.
