Footage shows Henderson protection Kane needed before England penalty miss

A new light has been shed on Harry Kane's penalty howler which suggests Jordan Henderson's influence was missed.

England fans need little reminder, but Kane skied his second spot kick which could've sent their quarter-final defeat to France to extra-time, having already scored from 12 yards earlier in the match. Many have argued someone else should have stepped up instead.

But a Twitter thread by psychologist Geir Jordet has highlighted Kane may not have been the problem, but rather the absence of Henderson impacted on the final result. The Liverpool captain had played a big role in the first pen, as he often does for his club.

Henderson regularly prevents opposition players from playing mind games by protecting the taker and making sure they get the ball at the earliest opportunity.

He also always sprints into the box from deep so he can be first on the scene to anticipate a rebound. However, Gareth Southgate had substituted him for Mason Mount just minutes before Bukayo Saka won the second pen.

And Kane was subsequently left alone for around 30 seconds after the decision was awarded to the Three Lions, unlike the first time around.

He was surrounded by French players instead. Mount and Jude Bellingham did eventually join him in the box to try and even out the numbers, but it may have been too little, too late.

There was also not an England player in sight afterwards with Henderson not there making his usual darting run. That was, until Bellingham approached soon after to offer a similar level of support.

Jordet also highlighted Henderson stayed with Kane post-match, unlike any of the rest of the squad. Some fans have hailed his thread, while others believe there's little in it.
