Footballer collapses from cardiac arrest in Norway and airlifted to hospital

A football match in Norway's second-tier was stopped on Monday after midfielder Emil Palsson suffered a cardiac arrest mid-game.

The 28-year-old Sogndal player suffered problems in the 12th minute of their match against Stjordals-Blink, the club confirmed.

The PostNord-ligaen fixture took place at the Fosshaugane Campus stadium.

"Midfielder Emil Pálsson had a cardiac arrest in the 12th minute," a statement said.

He was later revived by the medical crew present at the stadium and airlifted to hospital where he is now continuing to recover.

"Palsson was successfully resuscitated and then flown to Haukeland Hospital for further examination and treatment," it added.

Harrowing images shared online from the stadium showed both sets of players huddled around Palsson, in scenes reminiscent of the guard Denmark players formed around Christian Eriksen at the European Championships.

Palsson lay unconscious on the ground while his team-mates and the opposition protected his privacy, with medical staff attempting to bring him back to life.

The match was suspended not long after and the players told to return to the changing rooms. It was subsequently abandoned.

Social media users were quick to wish Palsson well.

One person said: "Sending all thoughts and prayers Emil Palsson right now. The Icelandic, Sogndal player seemingly collapsed on the pitch with the game later being abandoned and has reportedly been taken to Haukeland hospital."

Someone else added: "Horrible scenes at Sogndal this evening in the OBOS Ligaen. Our prayers with Emil Palsson."

While a third person commented: "Hoping for the best for Emil Palsson witch collapsed on the pitch in today's game between Sogndal and Stjordals-Blink. Pray!"

Palsson's on-field cardiac arrest is the third such worrying incident involving a professional footballer in the last six months.

#In June, Denmark ace Christian Eriksen collapsed following a cardiac arrest during his country's Euro 2020 game against Finland.

He required life-saving treatment on the pitch and was subsequently fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator device – which is a type of pacemaker.

While on Saturday, former Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero was rushed to hospital for tests after suffering chest pains and discomfort in the first half of Barcelona's 1-1 draw with Alaves.

Following tests on Monday, the Argentine has been ruled out until at least February 2022 and will receive treatment while his health is monitored.
