Former England boss Peter Taylor now managing struggling sixth-tier team

Peter Taylor, former manager of England's Under-21s side, has taken over the coaching reins at Welling United, a team currently in the relegation zone of the National League South.

Taylor, 68, has enjoyed an extensive career, with tenures at Southend United, Leicester City, Brighton and Hove Albion, Hull City, Crystal Palace, Stevenage Borough, Wycombe Wanderers, Bradford City.

In 2000, he was even famously appointed manager of the England national side for a single game – but the side lost 1-0 to Italy.

Taylor also managed the Three Lions Under-21s on two occasions – firstly in 1996 where he presided over 15 games, 11 won, three drawn and endured one defeat.

The second time came in 2004 before he was replaced by Howard Wilkinson.

Now the experienced manager has been appointed at Welling United, a club based in Bexley, England, and who play in the National League South. The club are currently sat 20th out of 21.

A club statement read: “The club is delighted to announce the appointment of Peter Taylor as the new First Team Manager.

"Peter has had an illustrious football career both as a player and then subsequently as a Manager, managing not only in the Premier League with Leicester City as well as various Football League Clubs (leading teams to promotion on four separate occasions), but also at international level with England Under 21 team and Under 20 team.

“Peter has taken charge of the First Team’s training session today and his first game in charge will be on Saturday away to Oxford.”

Taylor, during his time in the dugout, has won promotions with Brighton, Gillingham, and even twice with Hull, during his lengthy career in management.

He once won the Premier League manager of the month for September 2000, the period in which he was in the dugout for the Foxes.
