Ben Foster has revealed that he turned down a contract offer from Football League-chasing Wrexham, who are owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The ex-Manchester United and Watford man hung up his gloves at the end of last season, drawing the curtain on an impressive 22-year career.

However, the 39-year-old, who now has a successful YouTube channel and podcast, had an offer last September to carry on his playing career – but in the National League. Foster has explained that league leaders Wrexham gave him the chance to change his mind on stopping playing.

The goalkeeper played for the club – now owned by Hollywood stars Reynolds and McElhenney – in 2005 when on loan from Stoke. Foster told LiveScore: “Wrexham were one of the clubs I got an offer from earlier in the season.

“I had a few offers. [Wrexham] would have been cool. I’m over the moon for them. I actually won the LDV Vans Trophy [EFL Trophy] with Wrexham. They’ve changed the name about 700 times since then.

“It’s good to see. The thing with Wrexham is it’s such a football community and the people really care about that club. Even when I was there, they were going through tough times financially and had some owners they didn’t quite trust. It’s nice to see they’ve now got owners that really care about not only the club but the community.”

Wrexham are flying high in the National League and are on course to win promotion to League Two. In 37 games, the Wales-based club has picked up 91 points, with rivals Notts County not too far behind on 87 with nine games to go.

Managed by ex-Charlton, Bolton and Sunderland boss, Phil Parkinson, Wrexham beat Southend United in their last outing. Wrexham managed to get the win despite playing with ten men for a period of the game in the first half.

Defender Jordan Tunnicliffe suffered a nasty heady injury and was forced off in the first half of their 1-0 winat the Racecourse Ground on Saturday. Hard man Tunnicliffe’s return to action made co-owner McElhenney admit that his perception of football being a “soft” sport was wrong.
