France’s World Cup final plans in turmoil as five stars suffer mystery illness

France's World Cup final plans have been thrown into chaos after two more stars were struck down with a virus.

Vice-captain Raphael Varane and defensive partner Ibrahima Konate have both been taken ill in the French camp ahead of Sunday's crunch showdown with Argentina in Doha. It takes the total number of France stars suffering from the illness to five.

Team doctors have now put strict health measures in place to stop the bug spreading even more, which includes those feeling ill self isolating.

Earlier this week boss Didier Deschamps confirmed winger Kingsley Coman had become the latest player affected by the outbreak in the French squad.

Coman, along with Adrien Rabiot and Dayot Upamecano were not involved in France's semi final win over Morocco on Wednesday night.

It is feared the virus is linked to the air conditioning in the team hotel – and those affected are said to be suffering from a high temperature and fever-like symptoms.

News that Varane and Konate are now unwell will be a major concern to Deschamps as he looks to win back-to-back World Cups. If the duo were fit they would be expected to partner each other in the heart of the France defence in the Lusail Stadium.

The Manchester United and Liverpool stars have been on fine form during the tournament and are Deschamps's first choice centre back pairing ahead of the clash with Lionel Messi's men.

France star Randal Kolo Muani said: "There is the flu going round, but it's nothing too serious and people will be fine. I think everyone is being careful. The doctors have put in place a hygiene system to avoid the virus spreading.

"The sick players are in their rooms. We are washing our hands all the time and social distancing as well. We are thinking about all the rules."
