Frank Lampard reveals if Chelsea star Christian Pulisic will be fit for Brighton

Frank Lampard says Christian Pulisic is in contention to play against Brighton on Monday evening just over a month after pulling his hamstring in Chelsea’s FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal.

The American enjoyed a strong maiden campaign in the Premier League and was particularly impressive after the restart, scoring or assisting eight goals in nine games.

But his season came to an abrupt end at the start of last month when he pulled his hamstring as he raced through on goal at Wembley, making him a major injury doubt for this season’s Premier League opener.

But Lampard confirmed that the 21-year-old returned to training on Wednesday and has looked very sharp, suggesting both he and Cesar Azpilicueta – who was injured against Bayern Munich – will feature against Brighton.

Asked if the pair were available to play and if he was pleased to have them back, Lampard said: ‘Yeah, I’m certainly very happy to welcome them both back.

‘They’ve both trained since yesterday, their first day fully training with the team.

‘So they’re in contention for Monday, but I have to be careful.

‘I have a squad to pick from, but the way they’re training and the attitude they’ve come back with, it looks like they are over those injuries at the time.

‘Now I just have to make sure that I manage them both back in in their own ways.’

When Pulisic does take to the field for Chelsea he will be wearing the No.10 for the first time, which was vacated by Willian after he opted to leave Stamford Bridge on a free transfer and join Arsenal.

Before the Brazilian, the iconic Chelsea shirt was previously worn by Eden Hazard, while Pulisic’s old No.22 shirt has now gone to summer signing Hakim Ziyech.
