Timo Werner could struggle to get in the Chelsea side when Frank Lampard has a fully-fit squad at his disposal, according to Mark Schwarzer.
Werner is enduring a barren run in front of goal for the Blues, failing to score in his last nine appearances and squandering a number of golden opportunities in the process.
The Germany striker, who moved to Stamford Bridge in a £54million switch from RB Leipzig back in the summer, recently admitted he is finding the pace and physicality of the Premier League tougher than expected.
Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic’s fitness struggles have left Lampard with little choice but to stick with him despite his dry patch, while Callum Hudson-Odoi is still yet to rediscover his best form in west London.
Yet, when the trio are all fit and firing Schwarzer believes Werner could find himself left out of Lampard’s starting XI.
“If [Werner’s] contributing by doing a lot of work in the game, helping the team be successful, getting in the right areas, helping with assists, then I can understand why he stuck with him,” the former Chelsea goalkeeper told Stadium Astro.
“Don’t forget as well that Frank has had to balance some injuries – whether it is Pulisic, Ziyech in and out of the side.
“If we had a fully fit Pulisic and Ziyech, it may be a different situation for Timo Werner. He may find himself on the outside.
“I think it is only a matter of time. Add Hudson-Odoi to that mix, he has struggled with injuries.
“Timo Werner is the only one out of those four that has been fit all the time.”
