Gary Neville went wild as he led the celebrations at Wembley after Salford City beat Portsmouth to win the EFL Trophy final on penalties.

Neville was in the stands to see Salford win their first ever trophy, alongside co-owners and fellow Class of 92 stars Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

And the former Manchester United defender went live on Instagram just after Jason Lowe held his nerve to fire home the winning spot-kick.

Neville went beserk as he celebrated the win in an Instagram Live video with more than 4,000 followers watching, before going live again where he could be seen taking a colleague's phone.

Salford keeper Vaclav Hladky made a crucial stop in the shoot-out, denying Ronan Curtis to give Lowe the chance to win it.

Ryan Williams had missed with Pompey's first attempt, while Salford scored all four of their penalties.

The shoot-out followed a 0-0 draw at Wembley in which both goalkeepers produced a series of fine saves.

Salford's victory means they have won on both of their Wembley appearances, after they secured promotion to League Two by beating AFC Fylde in the National League promotion final in 2019.

But they will go down in history as one of football's shortest-lived champions – as the have to hand over the trophy before leaving Wembley Stadium.

Saturday's game was the 2020 final, which was delayed by 342 days from its original date last April because of the pandemic.

Salford and Portsmouth finally got the chance to play for the trophy under Wembley's famous arch just a day before Sunderland and Tranmere contest this year's finalat the same venue.

Portsmouth were FA Cup winners in 2008 and are actually the reigning EFL Trophy holders, having beaten Sunderland on penalties in the 2019 final.
