Georginio Wijnaldum’s stance on Liverpool future amid Barcelona transfer talks

Georginio Wijnaldum is reportedly happy to remain at Liverpool and wants to sign a new contract.

The Dutchman is entering the final year of his contract at Anfield and is being linked with a move to Barcelona.

Ronald Koeman has just taken over at the Nou Camp and is keen to reunite with his compatriot, with whom he managed as Holland boss.

It seemed more and more likely that the midfielder would be leaving the Reds this summer, but it seems that may not be the case.

According to Sky Sports , the 29-year-old has now decided he wants to stay with the Premier League champions and will snub interest from Barcelona.

It is claimed that Wijnaldum met with Jurgen Klopp on Wednesday to discuss his future, and that the talks were said to be “positive”.

Asked about speculation surrounding the midfielder’s future ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League opener with Leeds United on Saturday, the Reds boss said he was relaxed about the situation.

He said: “Yes. Absolutely fine about the future as far as we are involved with that. I cannot speak about the future in a few years but it is all fine. It’s all good for the moment.

"You know the situation. Between me, Gini and the club, everything is completely fine, apart from anything to announce to you.

“That’s more your problem not ours because we are completely fine in the situation.

“Since Gini is here I have 500-600 talks with him, pretty much. So that’s exactly the same like always. Nothing else to say about that.

“I speak to Gini when he came back from international duty and we have the talk as always. That’s all, really."

Liverpool signed Wijnaldum from Newcastle in 2016 and he has gone on to be a massive part of the team that won the Champions League and Premier League.

Fans would certainly be sad to see him leave but they would likely come around if the Reds sealed the transfer of Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara.
