Gerard Pique slams Barcelona over Lionel Messi saga as turmoil at club continues

Gerard Pique has hit out at Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu for the way he is running the club during an extraordinary interview.

The 33-year-old centre-back extended his contract and took a 50% pay cut this week in an attempt to help the Catalan giants with their financial issues.

But Pique launched a scathing attack on those in power behind the scenes in an explosive talk with Barcelona-based publication La Vanguardia.

Speaking about his teammate Lionel Messi's request to leave in the summer, Pique said: "How come the best player ever, that we’ve had the blessed fortune of enjoying, gets up one day and sends a burofax because you’re not listening to him? It’s all very shocking. What is happening?

"Leo deserves everything. The new stadium should be named after him and then whatever else commercial name they want.

"We have to take better care of our legends, not to disparage them. It makes me angry."

And he didn't stop there, going on to criticise Barcelona for asking the players to take pay cuts considering how much money they have spent in recent years.

He also made reference to a social media scandal which rocked the club in March after they were accused of hiring a company to create fake accounts to discredit people critical of Bartomeu.

Pique added: "As a Barça player I see that my club has spent money, money that they’re now asking us for, to criticize not only people outside of the club that have a historic relationship with the club, but active players.

"And that’s brutal. I asked for explanations and he [Bartomeu] told me ‘Gerard, I didn’t know.’ And I believe that.

"But then you see that the person who you know made the decision to hire out those companies for those services still works for the club."

The interview is far from ideal preparation for the El Clasico against Real Madrid, which takes place on Saturday, and it will be intriguing to see how Barcelona get on considering the turmoil which is taking place off the pitch.
