Getafe blast rival fans for chanting 'Greenwood, die' at Mason Greenwood
Getafe have slammed rival supporters who chant for Mason Greenwood to ‘die’ during La Liga matches after the on-loan Manchester United forward was targeted once again on Wednesday evening.
Manchester United news, exclusives and analysis
The 21-year-old joined Getafe on loan in the final hour of the summer transfer window after United held an internal investigation and concluded that the forward should restart his career elsewhere following his arrest in January 2022 for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.
Greenwood, who had all charges against him dropped in February, was targeted by Osasuna supporters during his debut for Getafe earlier this month.
And during Getafe’s 2-2 draw away to Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday night, Greenwood was once again subjected to ‘Greenwood, die’ chants from the home supporters at San Mames.
Getafe have now issued a statement criticising the actions of supporters, who also targeted their head coach, Jose Bordalas, and claim the club needs to ‘defend the honorability of our players and coaches’.
‘Getafe CF wants to express its total disapproval of the derogatory and intolerant chants, especially serious insults, which have been occurring repeatedly during the days of the LaLiga EASports National Championship and which damage the image and also the morale of our players and coaches,’ a statement from Getafe read.
‘Some insulting chants, outside any civic context, aggravated with criticism that we respect as freedom of expression, from a sporting point of view, but that we do NOT share when derogatory qualifiers, insults and disrespect are attributed to the members of that critical movement of the Getafe CF squad and coaching staff. Likewise, we ask for camaraderie, with your statements, among the players who make up the passionate world of football.
‘We cannot remain immobile and as mere observers, even more so when this current of opinion seeks to condition the arbitration group and its possible decision-making. A behavior, reiterated in this start of LaLiga EASports that we observe with disbelief and that is out of place.
‘The players and coaches of Getafe CF, as top-level professionals, participate in this spectacle and are aware of the media impact of playing in the best league in the world.
‘But, beyond that, they are people with feelings, who have family and friends who suffer with them and deserve the respect that we ask for without fissures in this statement.
‘All of this seriously damages the image of our club, the competition and the professionals who make it up.
‘Getafe CF has ALWAYS been known for being a team that respects organisations, rivals and other members of the world of football. But, seeing the seriousness of the events, the time has come to raise our voice and defend the honorability of our players and coaches.
‘Getafe CF against violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sport.’
