Grealish ‘excited’ at prospect of £100m Man City transfer in blow to Man Utd

Jack Grealish is reportedly ‘excited’ about the prospect of joining Manchester City this summer – coming as a major blow to long-term admirers Manchester United.

Grealish, 25, was heavily linked with a move to United in the previous summer and autumn transfer window, only to sign a new five-year contract with Aston Villa on the eve of the new season.

As a result, the West Midlands club are said to have placed an £80million price tag on their star man, meaning Old Trafford chiefs instead pursued a £40million deal for Donny van de Beek.

Amidst the financial constraints of the coronavirus pandemic, United were unable to fund big-money moves for Grealish or top target Jadon Sancho.

Reports have suggested they could come back in for both men this summer, but the Daily Mail claim City are now leading the race for Grealish’s signature.

Pep Guardiola has previously described the England sensation as “an exceptional player” and is a confirmed fan, while Grealish himself is said to be excited about the prospect of signing for such a talented side.

Should City lure him to the Etihad this summer, he will likely be joining the Premier League champions, as Guardiola’s men only require five more wins to clinch the title.

The Villa captain even opened up about his admiration for City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne earlier this month, branding him his “favourite player” to watch.

With club finances across Europe depleted by the pandemic, City are best placed to come up with the transfer fee required to prise Grealish away from Villa Park this summer.

That would rub salt in the wounds for United, who have been left frustrated by Van de Beek’s lack of progress under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this term.

The Dutchman has only recorded one goal and assist in 23 outings so far, of which only two were starts in the Premier League.
