Haaland admits being ‘irritated’ after missing World Cup in warning to rivals

Erling Haaland issued a stark warning to the rest of the Premier League after bagging a brace in Manchester City's 3-1 win over Leeds.

Haaland has been forced to sit on the sidelines since the middle of November, owing to the top-flight's break for the World Cup. But the former Borussia Dortmund man hit the ground running in some style on Wednesday evening as he put Jesse Marsch's side to the sword at Elland Road.

The 22-year-old scored twice after half-time as the reigning champions closed the gap on leaders Arsenal to five points at the top of the Premier League. And he could have had two or three more, had it not been for the heroics of Leeds stopper Illan Meslier.

After the game, Haaland, who now has 20 Premier League goals for the season, opened up on his frustration at missing the World Cup and how he's using it as motivation for the rest of the season.

"I have a target but I cannot say it," he revealed to Amazon Prime. "I just said inside the dressing room that I could have scored five but the most important thing is that we won.

"We have to hunt Arsenal. I could have scored a couple more but that's life and I have to train more. I've been at home, a bit mad that I've not been at the World Cup. I recharged my batteries.

"Watching other people score to win games at the World Cup triggered, motivated and irritated me. I'm more hungry than ever."

Haaland became the fastest-ever player to score 20 Premier League goals with his brace against Leeds, and he'll have another chance to add to that tally on Saturday against Everton.

City return to the Etihad to face Frank Lampard's Toffees on New Year's Eve, before travelling to Stamford Bridge for a crunch clash against Chelsea on January 5.
