  • Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson praised his side’s never-say-die attitude

Jordan Henderson claimed Liverpool’s winning mentality made the difference on Wednesday after they secured a dramatic last-gasp 2-1 win over Tottenham in the Premier League.

Mohamed Salah’s deflected strike put the Reds ahead but they were pegged back through a quick Tottenham counter-attack, which Son Heung-min emphatically finished off.

Tottenham appeared as if they would walk away from Anfield with a vital point, but Liverpool weren’t done just yet and in the 90th minute Roberto Firmino sealed the win thanks to a brilliant header from a corner.

The victory over Spurs, who sat top before Wednesday night’s play, has moved the reigning champions back to the summit, and Henderson praised his side’s never-say-die attitude.

Henderson told Amazon Prime: ‘It was a good game, very tactical, probably what you expect in terms of us dominating with the ball, creating chances and getting done on the counter. Overall the performance was outstanding.

‘We concentrate on keeping going until the final whistle goes. I am delighted with the lads.

‘We deserved the three points. One of our best performances of the season. I’m over the moon.’

The last-gasp victory has put the Reds three points clear at the top of the Premier League after 13 matches, despite Jurgen Klopp ruing injuries to key players.

But Henderson isn’t getting carried away about their narrow advantage over Spurs, insisting Liverpool’s sole focus remains their upcoming clash at Crystal Palace.

Henderson added: ‘We focus on ourselves. It might give them a dent but it is more about us. Our focus has to be on the weekend against Palace.’

While Firmino will take all the plaudits for his late heroics, Henderson was quick to single out Rhys Williams for praise for his assured performance in the heart of defence.

‘I told you before the game he has been outstanding and he was again,’ Henderson said. ‘He was one of the best players on the park, and I could hear him talking all the time.’

Liverpool were made to work extremely hard for their victory over Tottenham on Wednesday.

Jose Mourinho’s side sat very deep, not giving Liverpool’s frontline any space, while looking to punish them on the counter-attack.

Jurgen Klopp will be desperate for his side to push on now following their last-gasp victory

Mourinho’s plan so nearly worked but Firmino had the last laugh thanks to his towering header.

After a relatively tough start to the season for Liverpool, having already drawn four times and lost once, they will now be desperate to kick on.

After Crystal Palace on the weekend, Klopp’s side face West Brom at home before a trip to Newcastle sees out 2020.
