Henderson opens up on Liverpool alarm bells, £700k salary and feeling unwanted

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wanted Jordan Henderson to stay

Jordan Henderson has revealed all about his Liverpool exit earlier in the summer transfer window, including how he ended his Anfield career feeling unwanted. The 33-year-old left Merseyside after a trophy-laden 12-year stay in July, joining Steven Gerrard’s Al Ettifaq in a £13million deal.

The 23/24 home shirt for Liverpool pays homage to the past of the club, as well as collaborator Nike, with a strong 1970s influence. The iconic red, capped with bold white cuffs and collar really does invoke that classic Liverpool FC style while adding a cool retro touch

In an interview with The Athletic, Henderson claimed he had been preparing to enter the new season with Liverpool after discussions with Jurgen Klopp about his plans at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

But fresh talks with the Liverpool boss during the summer – during which four new midfielders arrived – sparked concerns regarding his role.

“There were a few things that sent alarm bells ringing. I’ve got a very good relationship with Jurgen. He was very honest with me,” Henderson explained.

“I won’t go into detail about the conversation because it’s private, but it put me in a position where I knew that I wasn’t going to be playing as much. I knew there were going to be new players coming in my position.

“And if I’m not playing, as anybody will know, especially the manager, that can be quite difficult for me and especially when I’ve been at a club for so long, I’ve captained the team for so long.

“Especially when England’s a big thing for me. You’ve got the Euros coming up. And then, there was an approach from Al Ettifaq to the club to see if it would be possible for me to go there.”
