Dean Henderson has thrown down the gauntlet in his battle with David de Gea and is convinced he will become Manchester United ’s number one.
Henderson has signed a new five-year deal with United but will clearly not accept a back-up role at Old Trafford.
Asked if he knows he cannot become England’s first choice if he is a number two at his club, Henderson said: “100 percent. 100 percent I accept that. But that won’t … (happen).”
And that means if he cannot get ahead of De Gea when the new season starts, the 23-year-old will soon push for another loan move to a Premier League rival.
Will Dean Henderson usurp David de Gea as Manchester United's No.1? Have your say below.
“I don’t think I want to be not playing after coming off a good season with momentum,” Henderson said. “It wouldn’t be clever for me to sit around and not play football. I don’t think it would help any parties at all.
“I’ll be going back on the first day of the pre-season working my b******s off to get in that starting line-up because it’s something I’ve always wanted.
“I’m so close now so I’m not going to give up – I’m going to put the pressure on.”
