Juventus have been fiercely criticised by the Italian press on Wednesday morning following their miserable 2-0 defeat by Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side went two behind before the break after a first-half double from Omer Atzili and struggled to mount a comeback as they fell five points behind group leaders Paris Saint-Germain and Benfica.

La Gazzetta dello Sport was especially critical of Juventus’ discipline and lack of organisation at the back, insisting their defence was ‘all at sea’ during the shock defeat.

The Italian newspaper led with the headline ‘We should be ashamed’, while the words ‘Shame is not enough’ were splashed across Tuttosport’s front pages.

All papers reinforced that Juventus president Andrea Agnelli was continuing to back under-fire manager Allegri, despite his side’s woeful run of form.

The Italian giants sit eighth in Serie A with just three wins from nine top-flight games so far and are 10 points behind league leaders Napoli.

The poor performance in Israel marked Juventus’ second successive loss in all competitions, following their 2-0 defeat by AC Milan at the San Siro last weekend.

Allegri was handed another major blow on Tuesday as Angel Di Maria limped off with a muscle injury midway through the first half.

The Argentine playmaker left the pitch in tears after sustaining the thigh problem, seemingly aware that he is likely to miss the World Cup in Qatar next month as a result.

Juventus must beat both Benfica and PSG to stand any chance of making it through to the Champions League knockout stage.
