Mamma mia! Italian restaurants are experiencing a dramatic slump in bookings following Italy's win over England in the Euro 2020 final.

That is according to TheFork UK, Europe's leading restaurant reservation platform, who report that British-based eateries are five times more popular this week, with Italian bookings down 55% in the aftermath of Sunday's match.

Italy hero Leonardo Bonucci taunted England fans after the heartbreaking Wembley final defeat by shouting: "You need to eat more pasta."

But it appears supporters aren't listening to the 34-year-old defender, choosing instead to swap focaccia for fish and chips and pizza for pie and mash.

Patrick Hooykaas, Managing Director at TheFork said: "It’s clear from booking data that the nation is eating their emotions following a disappointing defeat on Sunday, turning their backs on Italian firm favourites like pizza and pasta and seeking comfort from British cuisine to help heal sporting wounds.

"The Italians may have won the footie war but England is winning the foodie war this week."

That will be of little consolation to England fans still licking their wounds instead of pasta sauce after Sunday's gut-wrenching result.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate has a reservation with The FA until the 2022 World Cup, but like all good foodies, the 50-year-old doesn't want to outstay his welcome at the top table.

Chewing over his future on Monday, he said: "I don't want to commit to anything longer than I should and I don't want to outstay my welcome so all of those things need consideration.

"I want to take the team to Qatar, I feel we have made progress over the four years, we have had a fourth, a third and a second-placed finish and that is as good as anyone."
