Jackson's hat-trick is 'the worst' in the Premier League says Ladyman

Chelsea star Nicolas Jackson’s three goals against Tottenham was ‘the worst Premier League hat-trick I’ve ever seen,’ claims Ian Ladyman on Mail Sport’s It’s All Coming Up

  • Nicolas Jackson netted a 22-minute hat-trick in the London derby on Monday
  • Chelsea are next in action against reigning Premier League holders Man City
  • Why we should get excited about Cole Palmer – Listen here to It’s All Coming Up

Mail Sport’s Ian Ladyman believes Nicolas Jackson’s hat-trick against Tottenham earlier this week might be the worst that the Premier League has ever seen, as he claimed on the It’s All Coming Up podcast.

Chelsea secured a stunning 4-1 win over Tottenham on Monday in arguably the best game of the season already, with two players sent off for the hosts and a number of goals chalked off by VAR.

It was a huge result for a Chelsea side under increasing pressure, with Mauricio Pochettino returning to Tottenham, where he spent five years in charge.

Dejan Kulusevski had given the hosts the lead after six minutes, before a red card was shown to Cristian Romero and Cole Palmer levelled from the spot.

Following the break, Destiny Udogie was sent off as well, before Jackson’s trio of strikes on 75, 94 and 97 minutes, although the feat may go down as one of the least impressive in top-flight history, according to Ladyman.

‘Without being too unkind I have to say that was the worst Premier League hat-trick I’ve ever seen,’ Mail Sport’s Football Editor said.

‘He played poorly on the night, he missed chances against nine men and he eventually scored what amounted to three open goals late in the game.’

Jackson arrived at Stamford Bridge over the summer in a £32million deal, and had only scored twice in nine Premier League games before the pulsating London derby.

The Blues are next in action against Manchester City, and as such the result was made even more important giving Chelsea some confidence as they come up against the reigning champions.

Given their opposition at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, special guest Dominic King suggested that the hat-trick could boost Jackson – as well as making him a ‘cult hero’ at the club.

‘I would hope he goes into it with confidence – they’re the moments that fans latch onto and he’ll always be a cult hero. They’ll love him for that, Chelsea fans. I hope it’s something that gives him a lift.’

As for the title of ‘worst hat-trick in Premier League history’, King offered up an alternative for the award.

‘You say it was the worst hat-trick of all time, but do you remember – I think you were sat next to me actually – but do you remember Dirk Kuyt’s against Manchester United (in 2011)?’ he responded.

Liverpool expert Dominic King suggested Dirk Kuyt’s against Man United in 2011 might be deserving of the title

‘Nobody remembered that Kuyt had scored a hat-trick because there were three assists from Luis Suarez that everyone thought it was Suarez that had scored the hat-trick. I would say that’s the only one I can I can compare Jackson’s to.’

Kuyt’s hat-trick secured a memorable 3-1 win for Liverpool over arch-nemesis Manchester United back in 2011 at Anfield.

He needed the help of Suarez – who had only recently signed of the club at that point – but in doing so became the first Reds player to net three against the old enemy in 21 years.

Prior to the Dutch forward, Peter Beardsley had also struck three times in a 4-0 win at Anfield.
