James Maddison searched Spurs star on YouTube as he’d never heard of him

James Maddison says he had to search for his Tottenham team-mates' highlights on YouTube because he'd "never heard" of him.

The England midfielder joined Spurs from Leicester for £40million in the summer and has proven to be one of the signings, and arguably bargains, of the season thus far. He was brought in to be the central cog in Ange Postecoglou's fast-paced, all-action side that romped their way to eight wins in 10 Premier League games at the start of the campaign, but he wasn't the only new face.

Additions were made in attack, midfield and defence, but it was the arrival of the relatively unknown 27-year-old goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario that raised a few eyebrows, or in Maddison's case, prompted a hasty Google search.

"When we signed him I was like who is he? Kind of thing. I'd never heard of him," Maddison admitted to Ben Foster in a chat with Amazon Prime. "I'm in the back of this car on YouTube, Vicario highlights, to see if he's any good."

Like Maddison, Vicario's early form suggests Tottenham nabbed him for a bargain. The Italian, who joined for just £17million from Serie A side Empoli, has stepped effortlessly into Hugo Lloris' shoes and has produced several moments of magic already.

Where does Vicario rank among the best goalkeepers in the Premier League at the moment? Let us know in the comments section below.

He was arguably the star of the show when Spurs lost 4-1 to Chelsea last month after making several athletic saves and performing a near faultless sweeper-keeper role when his side deployed a suicidal high line after going down to nine men in the second half.

Vicario also has the highest save percentage in the Premier League at the moment, and Maddison reckons he's the best keeper in the division on current form. "He's a brilliant shot stopper," the former Foxes star said. "He's hard to score past. Sometimes we'll practice penalties and shooting in training, I want him in goal because he's the hardest to score past."

Maddison, meanwhile, has three goals and five assists in 11 league games for Spurs so far. He's currently out with a ankle injury he sustained during the defeat to Chelsea. Postecoglou's side haven't looked the same since, and have picked up just one point from four games in his absence.
