Jamie Carragher slams ’embarrassing’ Liverpool after third failed Lavia bid

Liverpool failed in a third bid for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia worth £45million on Monday.

And former Reds icon Jamie Carragher has hit out at the owners' failed attempts to get the deal done as their pursuit of the 19-year-old turns into an embarrassing saga.

Jurgen Klopp is undertaking a revamp in the engine room, with the arrivals of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion and Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig key captures in the rebuild.

But the recent departures of club captain Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, both to Saudi Arabian clubs, has left a gulf in the midfield that needs replacing.

And with less than a week before the Reds begin their Premier League campaign away at Chelsea on Sunday, Klopp is still short of midfielders. In recent days, he has seen their seemingly straightforward pursuit of Lavia from a relegated Southampton side turn incredibly frustrating.

Liverpool’s latest offer of £45m has fallen short of the Saints’ £50m valuation of the teenager, who was left on the bench for their opening Championship win against Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night.

Reacting to the news of the failed bid, Carragher tweeted: “This is embarrassing. Liverpool for years now have got deals done quickly with no fuss.

“If you don’t think he’s worth 50M move on, if you really want him pay it.

“Also not sure why LFC aren’t in for Caicedo, yes it’s a lot of money but Liverpool got big money for JH/FAB.”

Liverpool agreed a £12m fee for Henderson whilst also shifting his reported £190,000 a week wages, whilst Fabinho was sold for £40m, leaving Klopp desperate to replace the defensive midfielder despite him enduring a miserable campaign last season.

Carragher is hopeful transfer target Caicedo has made clear his intention to leave Brighton this summer after he sat out Brighton's pre-season friendly draw against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

Chelsea are known admirers of the Colombian, but so far the Seagulls have stood firm on their £100million asking price for the 21-year-old, who cost them just £5million when they signed him from Independiente del Valle in 2021.
