Jamie Redknapp names Frank Lampard’s best Chelsea summer acquisition

Thiago Silva could end up being Frank Lampard’s best signing of the summer at Chelsea, according to Jamie Redknapp.

Lampard is bolstering his Blues squad in spectacular fashion this summer, having been prevented from doing so last year due to the club’s transfer embargo.

The west London outfit have already forked out £140million on three of the most promising stars in European football, with Hakim Ziyech (£36million), Timo Werner (£54million) and Ben Chilwell (£50million) all sealing moves to Stamford Bridge, while a club-record £90million deal for Bayer Leverkusen youngster Kai Havertz is on the verge of completion.

To strengthen what was a leaky Chelsea defence last term, Lampard has also snapped up Silva on a free transfer following his departure from Paris St-Germain.

At 35 years old, and with his 36th birthday to come this month, many have questioned whether the Brazilian will be able to cope with the pace and physicality of the Premier League.

Yet while the likes of Havertz and Werner are soaking up most of the Chelsea hype this summer, Redknapp has tipped Silva to prove Lampard’s most important addition.

“It might not be the most exciting, but [their best signing] might end up being Thiago Silva because of his experience,” he told Sky Sports.

“They’ve got a lot of good young players, but sometimes you need someone that can come in at the end of their career and just calm everybody down.

“He’s got an amazing knowhow, he’s played at the top all of his career, he’s played for some of the biggest clubs – the likes of AC Milan and Paris St-Germain.

“He’s a winner, played for his country countless times, captained his country. So he’ll be a brilliant addition for them

“It will be interesting to see who Frank sees as the best partner for him. Is it Zouma? Is it Christensen? We don’t quite know that yet. And obviously in front of him you’ve got one of the best defensive midfield players in N’Golo Kante.

“So for the first time ever they’re giving young players a chance, the likes of Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham. Tomori had a lot of games last year as well.

“A new goalkeeper would be something that Frank will be trying to address, but it’s not that easy to find a goalkeeper. It’s really difficult.”
