Jesse Lingard’s final audition ahead of the summer transfer window did not go as planned, with the midfielder struggling in England’s defeat of Austria. The Three Lions took on Franco Foda’s side in their first warm-up match ahead of Euro 2020, with Bukayo Saka’s second-half goal ensuring Gareth Southgate’s side ran out winners.
It was announced on Tuesday that Lingard would be one of seven players that Southgate was cutting from his final squad for the tournament.
Despite his impending departure from the Three Lions’ camp though, Southgate opted to hand the 28-year-old a starting spot at the Riverside Stadium.
Lingard was the most surprising omission from that final squad, with his performances for West Ham leading many to believe he would feature at the tournament.
After failing to break into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United side, Lingard starred on loan at the Hammers, scoring nine goals and notching five assists.

But with Bruno Fernandes ahead of him in the attacking midfield position at Old Trafford, it appears likely that Lingard will depart in the summer.
He is also entering the final year of his contract with the Red Devils, with Solskjaer reportedly ready to sell the United academy product.
With Southgate making the decision to drop him from the England squad, the match against Austria represented one of his final opportunities to impress potential suitors.
England squad members from Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City will join the Three Lions on Friday, with Lingard unlikely to feature in the final warm-up match against Romania.

Lingard would have hoping to convince potential buyers to launch a bid for him when the summer transfer window opens next week in the clash with Austria.
But instead of impressing, Lingard struggled to make an impact as England failed to find a cutting edge against their opponents in Middlesbrough.
His one impact on the game came for Saka’s goal just before the hour mark, when Grealish launched a counter-attack.
Harry Kane received the ball and turned to release Lingard who played the ball through to Aston Villa star Grealish.
The midfielder was tackled which saw the ball run through to Saka, who knocked the ball in from a tight angle.
That was to be Lingard’s final real action in the match, with Southgate substituting him just four minutes after Saka’s goal.
While he impressed for West Ham in the second half of the season, Lingard is a player who has gone through mixed spells of form in the past.
Though Lingard has been linked with a move to Arsenal in the summer, his performance against Austria failed to prove he can have the consistency required by a top Premier League side.
