Jesse Lingard and West Ham will both be "gutted" a last-minute move from Manchester United didn't materialise, according to Glen Johnson.
Lingard enjoyed a fabulous loan spell with the Hammers in the second half of last season, bagging nine goals and five assists in 16 appearances.
He was understandably top of David Moyes' wish list this summer and with just a year left on his United deal a move seemed a genuine possibility.
But the Red Devils refused to budge on their rather steep reported asking price of £25m, despite that meaning he can leave for free at the end of the season.
Speaking to bettingodds.com, former Hammer Johnson said: “I think both Jesse and West Ham will be a bit gutted.
"He was enjoying his football, he was playing well and the Hammers loved him so I don’t know why that deal didn’t go through.
"Surely Manchester United weren’t that desperate to keep hold of him as they’ve signed a couple of attacking players this summer, so for me Jesse is even further down the pecking order than he was this time last year.
Where will Jesse Lingard be this time next year? Let us know in the comments section.
“It’s blown my mind how this transfer didn’t happen, but who knows? Maybe there’s the chance for another loan deal in January with hopefully an option to buy at the end of the season.
"For Jesse personally he’s missed a good opportunity to get himself a good contract and to be a Hammer. I think he’s let one go there.”
It's hard to see Lingard getting anywhere near regular game time with Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo all in the squad.
West Ham signed CSKA Moscow attacker Nikola Vlasic instead of Lingard for a deal worth around £27m on Transfer Deadline Day.
However, there's certainly still room in their squad for Lingard as Moyes was looking for a centre forward and attacking midfielder.
Lingard often operated in advanced positions last season so could be converted into more of frontman should a deal be done in January or next summer.
