A new book has revealed the extraordinary lengths super-agent Jorge Mendes went to in order to make his first-ever meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Messi vs. Ronaldo: One Rivalry, Two GOATs, and the Era That Remade the World’s Game details how Mendes had hoped to orchestrate a chance to come face to face with the Scotsman, only for a car crash to derail his plans, and almost cost him his life.

Now boasting a roster including some of the biggest names in world football, in 2002 the Portuguese was only just beginning to make a name for himself in the business of player representation.

Jorge Mendes fought through the pain barrier to make his first meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson

A notoriously hard grafter, Mendes worked his way into the conversation surrounding the move that saw goalkeeper Ricardo swap Real Vallodolid for Manchester United.

This was his first opportunity to meet with the biggest club in England, and its manager. A flight to Manchester was arranged and he was on it, though it was far from that simple.

As the book points reveals: ‘The night before the trip, Mendes was making the long drive back to Porto from Madrid with his girlfriend when the rear axle came loose from the truck in front of them.

‘Mendes swerved to avoid a collision and lost control of his Porsche. The car spun 90 degrees and smashed into the guardrail on the side of the road.

Mendes has become a globally recognised super-agent, but worked hard to develop his image

‘Airbags saved their lives, but Mendes’s face was covered in blood.’

Mendes was taken to hospital, but refused to be seen by doctors, discharging himself, despite the fact paramedics had found that the skin around his ear had been torn clean off.

Messi vs Ronaldo is out on November 10

In a bid to self-medicate, he grabbed gauze and bandages from a pharmacy before getting a lift straight to the airport in order to make his flight to the UK.

In excrutiating pain, Mendes made it to the meeting, where he made little impression at all on the man he was so desperate to finally shake hands with.

As the book continues: ‘Mendes made it. He even positioned himself at the table in such a way that Ferguson wouldn’t see the unsightly mess that used to be his ear.

‘It was a heroic effort, but to no avail. Mendes, his ear throbbing and heavily bandaged, uttered no more than four words the entire meeting.

‘One year later, Ferguson had no recollection of him being there at all.’

Luckily for Mendes his first meeting with Ferguson didn’t set the tone. He was key component in the move a year later that saw Cristiano Ronaldo make his move from Sporting to United – a move that catapulted both Portuguese stars into the concious of football fans around the globe. Both have stayed there ever since.

Mendes was desperate to meet Ferguson, who went on to deliver countless titles with Ronaldo
