Jose Mourinho openly criticised his Roma players on Thursday despite their 5-1 demolition of CSKA Sofia in the Europa Conference League.
Mourinho’s Roma came from behind to thrash the 10-man Bulgarian side in the group stage opener at the Stadio Olympico but was “not satisfied at all”.
Former Plymouth midfielder Graham Carey opened the scoring for the visitors, before a Lorenzo Pellegrini double, and a goal each from Stephan El Shaarawy, Gianluca Mancini and Tammy Abraham put the icing on the cake.
The win means Mourinho has continued his fantastic start to life as Roma boss and has now won six straight games, but the Portuguese manager was far from impressed with his side’s display.
“We didn’t play well. We are really creating a team, but today I didn’t like our game,” said Mourinho.
“At times we did well, a strong team is coming together, we have already talked about it and must be even more of a team when we go into the difficult moments.
“However, I was not satisfied with the performance at all. We did not play with quality. Just two days ago we trained about this, but the full-backs didn’t push much, there wasn’t enough intensity, we lost so many defensive duels.
Will Jose Mourinho's Roma win Serie A this season? Let us know in the comments section.
“I cannot say we played badly, but we didn’t do well either and certainly not enough to warrant a 5-1 result. Yes, we have more quality than CSKA Sofia, but we didn’t do enough.”
However, one player who did have a good game was captain Pellegrini, who is set to sign a new contract with the club.
“He is a player with quality, a great deal of potential and he told me yesterday that he’ll sign the new contract soon,” Mourinho said.

“I think it can definitively give more strength to this rapport he is building with the fans. Pellegrini is the captain, he will sign a new contract and is very important for us.”
Meanwhile former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham played just 16 minutes in the fixture but got himself on the scoresheet within ten minutes of coming off the bench.
Roma are currently top of Serie A with nine points – ahead of AC Milan and Napoli on goal difference – after three straight wins in their opening three league games.
