AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho is reportedly eyeing a move for Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek – and is hopeful that Tammy Abraham can help him lure his former Blues team-mate to Italy.

Mourinho has endured a difficult start to his reign in Rome after returning to Serie A in the summer.

The Portuguese boss has his side sat in sixth spot after a rotten run of form; 12 points behind current league leaders, and Mourinho’s old club, Inter Milan.

Mourinho has now turned his attention bolstering his squad in the January transfer window, and a new report has revealed that he’s set to raid another of his former clubs, Chelsea.

According to Il Romanista, Mourinho is keen on striking a deal for Loftus-Cheek, who has enjoyed somewhat of a career renaissance at Stamford Bridge this term under current Blues’ boss Thomas Tuchel.

Roma are in desperate need of midfield reinforcements, and the 25-year-old Lewisham-born midfielder fits the bill.

Although it remains unclear if Loftus-Cheek would be open to a switch to Italy, Mourinho is hopeful that the midfielder’s former team-mate, Abraham, can work his magic in convincing the powerful midfielder to follow him in making the jump to Serie A.

The duo came through the club’s academy together before going on to play together in the senior team at Stamford Bridge before Abraham’s departure last summer.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed life abroad. Abraham has fired himself back into England contention after netting 10 times in 23 appearances since his £34million transfer.

If Abraham can persuade Loftus-Cheek to seek an exit from west London, Roma would reportedly be willing to cover the midfielder’s bulky £170,000-a-week salary to facilitate a move.

The report goes on to outline that Roma would prefer a loan switch with an option – although it’s unclear if Chelsea would be willing to entertain the idea of losing Loftus-Cheek given his semi-regular role under Tuchel this season.

Tuchel lauded the Blues midfielder ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Manchester United late last month; which could indicate that he’d be loath to lose him.

“I see the potential and I think he knows about his potential,” said Tuchel.

“Since he was an academy player everyone was very aware about his potential.

“But the next step is to show it to everyone. Everybody in the stadium must go home and know how good and how strong Ruben is.

“That is the next step, to actually put the potential on the street and drive the car as fast as possible.

“This is what he’s doing for many weeks otherwise he would not play, otherwise there would be no chance for him to play, because this is about performance.

“He deserves to play and he deserved to play some weeks ago.”
