Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool cannot win in the “theatre” of the transfer market but that will not impact on their title defence.
The Reds boss was in relaxed mood when discussing his side’s approach to the new season, pointing out they are damned if they do not spend money and damned if they do.
There has been some vocal criticism from a section of Reds fans, worried that rivals such as Manchester City and Chelsea have splashed the cash in their pursuit of a Klopp side which has spent only £11million this summer.
But he said: “That is always the same.
"I have been here for five seasons and I don’t think you were ever happy with our transfer business.
“Probably the only year [it wasn't] was when we brought in Virgil [van Dijk] and Alisson.
"But people maybe thought, ‘good but has he proven anything? Is he really that? Is he worth that? Have they paid too much’?
“It is always these things. It is a little bit like a theatre every year.”
Some fans have suggested Klopp is a victim of his own success, with the club’s owners refusing to spend big money because he has such a compelling record of improving the players he has.

But the Premier League manager of the year dismissed such a claim and insisted his side will be ready to defend their crown with intense quality.
“I don’t feel a victim of success. Not at all. And I don’t sense any negativity,” he said. “I sit here and even if I try I can’t feel in this moment that we became champions last year. No chance. It is too long ago. I am really not interested in it. It is all about what can we do on Saturday.
“And then there will still be some speculation until October 6 maybe longer.
"That is something we have to deal with and we will deal with that, it’s not such a big problem. We have to be ready. All the rest is normal. It is business.”
Klopp though, offered some hope to fans who wants some news signings, by insisting Liverpool will take the plunge for the right player.
“We look. It is not that we sit and don’t even try and have transfers, we just want to have the right ones. That is it. That is all. If we find it and the situation is right we will do something and if not then not.”
