Jurgen Klopp has urged Liverpool to ‘go for’ Manchester United, as the Reds look to twist the knife on their bitter rivals.

England’s two most successful clubs lock horns on Sunday at Anfield for the first time since Liverpool humiliated Erik ten Hag’s side with a 7-0 thrashing last season. Now United travel over on the M62 after a disastrous start to this campaign has left them with seven Premier League defeats and still without a win against a top-nine side.

But Klopp is wary of United being motivated by the criticism they’ve been hit with. He said: “I do not like all this talk around it. It is always like this. The more bad things people say about them, the stronger they will show up.

“That is always the case. I don’t like that. I don’t know about the situation there. I am interested in our situation. It is a home game and we have to show up. We are in our own stadium, we have to create an atmosphere and go for them and not think about anything else.”

Klopp admits he can’t ignore the noise around Ten Hag with the United boss under huge pressure heading to Anfield. He said: “I will make sure from our point of view that we will be 100 percent focused on the right stuff.

“But we are human beings and there is a noise around and when I am aware of it that means that there is obviously something going on. It is all fine.”

Liverpool head into the weekend top of the table so another victory against their rivals will keep them in pole position in the title race. It’s a huge week for their chances with fellow challengers Arsenal to come next weekend after a Carabao Cup quarter-final against West Ham.

Klopp said: “We know what it means. No-one would expect us not to care. We care a lot. We cannot go nuts before the game already. We have to start the game properly. There is space to improve in our football.

“One of our best games was against Aston Villa and they are obviously flying through the league. They had a problem against us, at least. From now on they are all finals. That is how it is.

“In intense periods in December it is always about getting through. I don’t know anyone who plays their five best games in December. Get through it and get results, head up and go from there.”

LIVERPOOL'S EXPECTED XI VS UNITED (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Szoboszlai, Endo, Gravenberch; Salah, Nunez, Diaz.
