Jurgen Klopp wore Cristiano Ronaldo boxers on night of Champions League final

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp wore Cristiano Ronaldo boxers when they first met Real Madrid in the Champions League final – honestly.

While it may seem like a far-fetched lie, Klopp's underwear choice for the 2018 showdown in Kyiv has been spoken about by a number of the Reds squad who were in the changing room at the time.

The first to let slip was since-departed midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, who revealed to the The Athletic in August 2019: "We saw he was wearing the boxer shorts of Cristiano Ronaldo. He did the meeting with his shirt stuffed inside his CR7 boxers.

"The whole changing room was on the floor laughing their heads off. That really broke the ice. Usually in those situations, everyone is serious and concentrated. But he was relaxed and made this joke.

"He’s done hundreds of jokes likes that. If you see that your manager is really confident and relaxed, it will have an effect on players. He is a father figure in those things for the players. With his jokes and his body language, he takes the pressure off players."

While it seemed like Klopp had worn Ronaldo's branded boxers on purpose, it may have just been a coincidental mix-up – as former defender Ragnar Klavan explained on the Betsafe podcast in September 2021.

Klavan said: "The last team meeting with Klopp before heading out to the field, I don’t know if it was intentional but the first sentence was 'Guys, I didn't do it on purpose but look at these undies'. He was wearing Cristiano Ronaldo CR7 underwear.

"[Klopp said] 'It happened by accident, my wife packs my things. I just put them on'. It took the load off of everyone. It was his way."

Veteran James Milner also opened up on the moment earlier this year, and he believes Klopp knew what he was doing. “That was his way of trying to relax the boys," Milner told the Daily Mail in May.

"Around games, he’ll think, ‘What is the narrative?’. Like if something's on the lads’ minds that they’ve seen on social media. He’s good at nipping things like that in the bud."

Of course, Klopp's underwear choice ultimately didn't help his Liverpool players. They were beaten 3-1 by Real, with Ronaldo lifting his fifth Champions League trophy.
