Key Roar pair extend stay with Brisbane

Roar captain Tom Aldred and star midfielder Jay O’Shea have committed their long-term futures to Brisbane by signing contract extensions with the three time A-League champions.

Brought to the club in 2019 by former Roar coach Robbie Fowler, Aldred and O’Shea have been integral to Brisbane’s solid form over the past two seasons.

“It was a huge decision to come to the football club, obviously moving across the world but right from the word go I have really enjoyed my time here,” said 30-year-old former Motherwell and Blackpool defender Aldred, who became Brisbane’s sixth club captain soon after his arrival in Queensland.

“We had a few discussions about where the club was going, and it wasn’t a difficult decision to stay for longer.

“For me to tie my long-term future down here is an incredible thing for me.

“It allows me to firmly focus on football and really focus on helping to build success here in Brisbane.”

“I feel like we’ve built a fantastic team and we have the core of what is needed to do really well, and by that, I mean play in finals and win trophies.”

Aldred’s long-term deal has been complemented by Irishman O’Shea’s decision to extend his stay with Brisbane for at least another three years.

O’Shea, who scored a memorable goal in the Roar’s 3-1 win over Adelaide United last Saturday night, intends to finish his playing career with Brisbane.

“Since day one, I have loved every minute,” said former Birmingham City midfielder O’Shea, the club’s reigning Players’ Player of the Year.

“Everyone at the club has made me feel so welcome. My family are happy here, we’re settled, and I would love to stay here beyond football. There’s only one place I wanted to be.”

Roar coach Warren Moon, whose in-form side host Melbourne Victory at Dolphin Stadium on Saturday, praised the contribution of Aldred and O’Shea to Brisbane’s cause.

“Jay is a true professional on and off the pitch and he has had an immense impact during his time in Brisbane,” Moon said.

“He’s the kind of player every head coach wants in their side, setting the standards high and getting the best out of his teammates.

“Tom has had an immeasurable impact on the club, particularly in the playing group, over the last two seasons.

“His leadership, both on and off the field, is of the highest quality. He has been a superb captain of our club, one that leads by example, sets the standards and that his teammates look to for guidance.

“He has signalled his intent to be part of the success we are building here in Brisbane Roar and we’re beyond thrilled to have him on board for the coming seasons.”
