Jurgen Klopp will miss Liverpool's clash with Chelsea on Sunday after returning a suspected positive Covid test.

The Reds boss had admitted a number of Liverpool players had tested positive ahead of the crunch Premier League fixture.

And now the manager himself is set to miss the game with Pep Lijnders due to take his place in the dugout.

A Liverpool statement read: "Jurgen Klopp will miss Liverpool’s Premier League meeting with Chelsea on Sunday after returning a suspected positive COVID-19 test result.

"The Reds manager, who reported mild symptoms ahead of the fixture, is now isolating.

"Assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders will therefore lead the team for the 4.30pm GMT kick-off at Stamford Bridge.

"Testing of the entire first-team set-up has revealed no further positive cases within the playing squad in addition to the three confirmed by Klopp on Friday.

"Three backroom staff members have returned suspected positive results, however."

Liverpool are already without a number of players due to injuries, though there is no suggestion the fixture will be postponed.

Andy Robertson will be absent due to a suspension while Thiago Alcantara and Takumi Minamino are also unlikely to feature.

Klopp had said on Friday: "It is not so cool at the moment.

"I'm not able to say who [has tested positive] but it will be pretty clear on the teamsheet the day after tomorrow.

"Postponement? Not yet but we've never had this outbreak. It's more every day another one, a few staff. It feels like a lottery."
