Leicester City have agreed a deal with Southampton for the transfer of defender Jannik Vestergaard, subject to the Danish defender passing a medical.

A £15million deal has been struck between the two clubs and now manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has confirmed the centre-back will be moving to the King Power stadium.

Despite the deal having not been formally rubber-stamped, it has been confirmed by Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers that Vestergaard is already training with his new club, with permission from Southampton, so that he can feature against Wolves in Saturday’s Premier League opener.

Leicester’s search for a defender accelerated last week after a serious injury sustained to Wesley Fofana in pre-season.

Brendan Rodgers side entered the market after the injury to Fofana, who will not play again before 2022 after breaking a leg and damaging knee ligaments, and Jonny Evans, who is out until at least mid-September with a foot problem.

It is understood that Saints will land an initial £14million fee for Vestergaard’s services that will rise to £15million with certain add-ons, taking the total that the club have taken from transfer sales this summer to over £50million.

Hasenhuttl confirmed the deal was done, and will now look outside of England for a replacement

The defender joins star striker Danny Ings in leaving the club this summer, after he swapped St Mary’s for Aston Villa in a £25m switch plus add-ons.

Vestergaard joined Saints from German club Borussia Monchengladbach three years ago and has been a regular at the heart of defence. He was also part of the Denmark squad that made the semi-finals of Euro 2020.

Leicester are keen to move on fringe players like Hamza Choudhury and Dennis Praet as they eye a second centre-back and a left-footed attacker.

Southampton, meanwhile, are looking closely at options outside England as they try to replace Vestergaard.
