Liverpool could easily get themselves back into Premier League title contention by solving one of their biggest problems, which is holding them back from competing with the likes of Manchester City as things stand. The Reds have made a promising start to the new Premier League campaign and currently sit just two points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s side after six matches.
Liverpool are yet to taste defeat in all competitions so far this season, having taken plenty of points from losing positions in recent weeks. They came from behind to beat Newcastle at St James’ Park last month, just days after doing the same against Bournemouth on home soil.
The Reds have also beaten Wolves and LASK after going behind inside the opening minutes, while they produced another comeback to defeat Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night. Although this trend of fighting back has shown that Liverpool’s resilience and determination is second to none, it has also highlighted their slow starts on an almost weekly basis.
Jurgen Klopp’s men have scored six goals and conceded seven in the first halves of matches this season, clearly highlighting their tendency to struggle early on. It is a different story after half-time, though, with the Reds having scored a total of 15 times without reply.

It makes for an interesting statistic when compared to City, who have scored seven goals and conceded just twice before half-time this season. Liverpool will seemingly need to improve the way they settle into matches in order to put things right, with a potential Premier League title charge on the cards if they can do it as a matter of urgency.
Any team hoping to compete for silverware will need to perform well for entire matches in order to achieve their goals, rather than leaving it late to fix the damage left by slow starts. Only time will tell if Liverpool can start flying out of the blocks in their upcoming fixtures, with early goals often proving useful in setting the tone for regular victories.
Liverpool icon Michael Owen has already urged Klopp to get to grips with the issue of starting slowly, which he feels will be a major concern behind closed doors at Anfield.

Owen said on TNT Sports: “He [Klopp] will probably be looking at it like why has that happened? Is it a coincidence or is it happening too much to draw some conclusions from it? But the overriding feeling would be a bit of relief.
“It is a great first result getting three points away from home and you are in a really good position. He will be delighted, but a few little concerns about why it is happening all the time. But it is some character to keep coming back and go on and win.”
It remains to be seen if Liverpool will be able to make a fast start in their next Premier League outing against high-flying Tottenham on Saturday. The Reds will be desperately hoping to avoid another early setback against their north London rivals, who are full of confidence after impressing under the guidance of new boss Ange Postecoglou so far this season.
