Liverpool chase Italy’s Barella, boost in Edouard hunt, Millar sale agreed

Questions have been raised as to how Liverpool will replace Georginio Wijnaldum after he left the club on a free transfer to join PSG, and Serie A champion Nicolo Barella could provide an answer.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are said to be seeking a deal for the Inter Milan midfielder following his commitments with Italy at Euro 2020, but their initial approach has not been well-received.

Elsewhere, Leicester’s recent acquisition of Red Bull Salzburg striker Patson Daka could leave Liverpool with less competition in their efforts to sign Odsonne Edouard.

The sale of academy graduate Liam Millar might help fund a move for the Celtic star, too, with the former set to join Swiss side Basel after the two clubs agreed a fee.

Reds raising Barella interest

Much of the transfer interest at Anfield now concerns how Klopp intends to replace Wijnaldum, who made 51 appearances in all competitions during his last season as a Liverpool player.

Italian journalist Enrico Camelio recently said on’s Calcio MercatoShow that enquiries have been made about Inter playmaker Barella—but his current employers are not open to selling.

It’s understood Liverpool were informed their latest target ‘cannot be transferred’, even amid the Nerazzurri’s recent financial troubles, although hope may not be lost.

Achraf Hakimi looks set to sign for PSG in a big-money move that will ease Inter’s debt troubles, but it’s hinted Barella may be another valuable asset used to raise funds in case that doesn’t do the job.

Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were sparsely used by Klopp last season, while the manager will have one eye on the ageing frame of 35-year-old James Milner, whose contract expires in 2022.

Leicester provide Edouard boost

It’s been almost six years since Brendan Rodgers was relieved of his duties as Liverpool boss, but the Leicester chief may have inadvertently aided his old club in any pursuit of Celtic striker Edouard.

The Foxes recently wrapped up a £23million deal for Salzburg forward Daka, which almost certainly means last season’s fifth-place finishers won’t continue chasing Edouard themselves.

The Liverpool Echo suggested this could play into Klopp’s hands if he does want to recruit the former France under-21 international, who has scored 83 times in 168 outings for the Hoops.

Diogo Jota offered a handy alternative to regular frontman Roberto Firmino at times last season, but Edouard, 23, would provide another different skill-set up front.

Millar braced for Basel transfer

Five years after moving to Merseyside from Fulham on a free transfer, Millar is set to pack his bags once more after Liverpool agreed to sell the forward to Basel for £1.3m.

The Athletic reported on Friday that the 11-cap Canada international will head to Switzerland after making a sole first-team appearance for the Reds, an FA Cup victory over Shrewsbury in April 2020.

According to the report, Millar had attracted interest from England’s lower leagues and further abroad, with Charlton Athletic, Blackpool, New York Red Bulls, Odense among his admirers.

The 21-year-old previously spent back-to-back seasons on loan with Kilmarnock before being farmed out to Charlton last term, where he scored twice while making a career-high 27 appearances.
