  • Jurgen Klopp said he is set to miss the Community Shield against Arsenal
  • The 27-year-old will also miss friendlies against Stuttgart and Red Bull Salzburg

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to miss the rest of the club’s pre-season programme after picking up a knock to his knee.

The midfielder picked up the injury during a challenge in training on their pre-season camp in Austria and has returned to the club’s Melwood training ground to begin his rehabilitation.

The Premier League champions have friendlies lined up against Stuttgart and Red Bull Salzburg in Austria before returning to the UK to face Arsenal in the Community Shield.

He is now set to miss friendlies in Austria as well as the Community Shield against Arsenal

But German boss Klopp has confirmed those fixtures are set to come too soon for the England international, who will not get the chance to face his former club at Wembley on August 29.

‘[It was] really unfortunate. An unfortunate situation as well; it was a challenge [in training],’ Klopp told the club’s official website.

‘It looks like it is very similar to what Hendo [Jordan Henderson] had, which keeps him out for we don’t know for sure exactly how long.

‘But for sure this pre-season he will not make a game, Arsenal for sure not and then we will see. The next game is probably two weeks later, but I don’t know.

Oxlade-Chamberlain had a relatively injury-free season in 2019/20, missing just five games

‘We have to wait but it is far away from being perfect, of course. It is really hard for him and hard for us, but it is not to change.’

As Klopp stated, the news will come as a blow for 27-year-old Oxlade-Chamberlain, who enjoyed a relatively injury-free season during the 2019/20 season.

He missed just five games with a head and ankle injury respectively, but is now in a race against time to be fit for their opening Premier League games against Leeds.

The fixture is the start of a tough start to the season for Klopp’s men after they were handed a brutal start to their title defence.

After the Anfield club welcome Marcelo Bielsa’s Championship winners to Anfield, they face a trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea and a clash with FA Cup holders Arsenal in the third game.

However, the club did receive a boost when they were granted permission by the FA to continue their pre-season training camp without quarantining on their return as Austria was named on UK Government list.
