Liverpool fans are all saying the same thing about summer signing Ibrahima Konate after the centre back shone in the Reds 3-1 win over Newcastle on Thursday night.

The French defender played the full 90 minutes at Anfield after Virgil van Dijk missed out following a suspected positive Covid-19 test.

It may have only been Konate's fifth Premier League outing, but the £36million summer arrival from RB Leipzig certainly didn't look out of place as he deputised for the Dutchman.

At only 22 years of age, a bright future looks to await the centre-back, and the more Liverpool fans see of him, the more it seems they believe he will go on to become one of the greatest defenders in the game – even eclipsing Van Dijk.

Following the 3-1 success over the Magpies, one avid Liverpool fan tweeted: "Konate is 22. You cannot get past him. He will be better than Virgil Van Dijk!!!!"

The sentiment was echoed by a number of other supporters, with one particularly pleased match-goer noting: "First time seeing Konate live and my word is he gonna be the next top centre back in the world. He's like a younger Van Dijk. Also Matip as reliable as ever. Man is cool as ice."

Another added: "We actually managed to cop a baby Van Dijk in Konate. He’s absolutely unreal," while a fellow Reds fan said: "Did anyone notice Konate did all the things we would expect Van Dijk to do in the match? He is 22."

Will Ibrahima Konate go on to become an even better defender than Virgil Van Dijk? Let us know in the comments section below.

Should the new Liverpool favourite go on to achieve even half as much success as Van Dijk, he will have enjoyed a stellar career.

Since arriving from Southampton for a club-record £75 million fee, the Dutch captain has played an integral role as the Reds claimed a sixth European Cup in 2019 and ended their 30-year wait for a top-flight title as they lifted the Premier League in 2020.

Van Dijk's consistently exceptional displays have also seen him recognised as the PFA Players' Player of the Year, UEFA Player of the Year and runner-up for the 2019 FIFA Ballon d'Or.
