Liverpool fans furious as Messi wins another award and say ‘voting is rigged’

Liverpool fans have been left furious after Lionel Messi pipped Thiago Alcantara to the award for ‘Goal of the Champions League Group Stages’.

Thiago scored a wonderful volley from outside the box against Porto in a 2-0 win for Jurgen Klopp’s side, with the ball curling into the net beautifully.

It was a strike that saw him deservedly put up for the goal of the group stage award alongside nine other players, including Messi.

The Argentine superstar’s first-time shot against Manchester City saw him nominated, with Robert Lewandowski, Alex Telles, Vinícius Júnior, Marco Asensio, Sébastien Thill, Mason Greenwood, Adama Traore and Lukas Nmecha joining them.

Though Thiago’s was a stunning goal, Messi won nearly a quarter of the vote to be crowned the winner, with nearly 200,000 people voting.

But the result left Liverpool fans fuming that Messi had won yet another award and insisted that their player’s goal should have been triumphant.

Reds supporters blasted the voting as being "rigged" and were left perplexed that Thiago’s goal was only good enough to earn second place.

“Another rigged voting,” one fan tweeted.

“How has that finished ahead of Thiago? It's embarrassing the bias Messi and CR7 get tbh, it actually minimises their legacy for me,” another added.

“That Thiago strike bent the laws of physics but couldn’t get the votes smh,” a third wrote.

Those complaining about Messi’s win highlighted the fact that he brings with him a legion of supporters as the reason behind his win.

“Nah Thiago should have won that. That's a normal goal for Messi,” one fumed.

“Thiago doesn’t have PR like Messi,” another claimed.

“This guy can’t lose. The name ‘Messi’ alone means he’s already front runner for every individual award,” a third tweeted.

Thiago’s strike helped Liverpool to finish top of their group, setting up a last-16 tie with Inter Milan, while Messi and his PSG team will take on Real Madrid.
